The First generation - Lord Townley

First Generation

Lord Lawrence Townley, my sixth great grandfather was born in Burnley, England. He also died in Burnley and resided in Townley Castle, Burnley around 1690.

The castle was reportedly built in 1100 AD.

His children I have knowledge of were:

William, who died in 1751.

Mary, who married a Joseph Lawrence against the Lord's wishes and came to America.

Seeking info on Margaret Elizabeth BREAST. Born probably 1820s and died probably 1870s/80s, in Nashville. Married Olive Salle LeSueur about 1850. Believe her parents to be Clement Breast and Margaretta Flood. Family legend says Margaretta was granddaughter or g- granddaughter of wealthy Scotish earl, Lord Townley, whose daughter married against his wishes a Mr. Lawrence, and came to America. Am seeking any information on the Breast, Flood, Lawrence or Townley lines. Contact me at: 68 Log Cabin Lane, Buena Vista, VA 24416 or via e-mail. Pete Hamilton

Great Great Great Great Uncle Daniel B. Meredith

Daniel B. Meredith was a fourth great uncle born on March 1, 1808 in Whiteland Farms, Chester Co., Pa. He died at 226 Church Street, West Chester, Pa. on June 5, 1895 at 87. He was buried in the Friends Burial Society Cemetery in West Chester. He was originally a farmer, but after 1864 ran a butchering business in West Chester.

Public Sale Will be sold at public sale, on Saturday the 19th day of March, 1849, at the farm house of the subscriber of West Goshen township, half a mile south of the Borough of West Chester, the following Personal property: Nine head of large Eastern Steers, 1 yoke of Working Oxen, improved stock, 7 shoat pigs, 2 ox carts, deerborn, hay bed, large roller, grain fan nearly new, corn sheller, cutting box, herse rake, 2 sets of leading gears nearly new, ox yokes, ox chains, patent lock, 3 feed chests, ploughs, harrows, cultivator, hoes, fork, rakes, grain cradles, hay by the ton, corn by the bushel, grain in the ground, 300 pounds of GU. ANO. 2 first rate hives of Bees, &c. Feb 27 Itpd Daniel B. Meredith. Downingtown Archieve. 2/27/1849

Enfeebled with the weight of his four score and four years, Daniel B. Meredith, one of West Chester's oldest and best-known residents, tottered slowly into the Court House and up to the Grand Jury room this morning to listen to the proceeding of a jury appointed to inquire into his sanity. The master appointed to hear the case was Robert E. Monaghan, Esq., and the jury was composed of Jackson Hughes, John S. Mullin, Charles W. Grimm, Esau Loomis, Thos. Mercer, A. P. Hall, Chas. M. Crowell, Haines Passmore and John Sahler.
This proceeding is taken by the sons of Mr. Meredith, Henry and Llewellyn, who allege that their father, by reason of his enfeebled mental condition, is not capable of attending to his financial affairs, and ask that a committee be appointed by the court to attend to these matters. John J. Pinkerton, Esq., and Washington Townsend, Esq., represented the petitioners, and Thos. W. Pierce, Esq., the defendant, Mr. Meredith. The following testimony was elicited at the hearing this morning...(
The reported testimony is in my files - LEM.) Daily Local News 6/1/1893

The hearing in the lunacy case of Com. vs. Daniel B. Meredith was again called up this morning by the examiner, Robert E. Monaghan, Esq. The jury in the issue was all on hand promptly at 9:30 o'clock, consequently the examination of the witness proceeded uninterruptedly. The following is the additional evidence submitted by the defense:

The Evidence
Edwin O. Taylor testified that he had known Daniel B. Meredith for a number of years; that he had business transactions with him, and that he believed him of sound mind. He believed that Mr. Meredith had sufficient mental capacity to transact his business.

John Thorpe testified that he had known Daniel B. Meredith for several years, had done work for him. His conversation was intelligent in regard to the business he was transacting. He appeared entirely rational.
Robert H. Newlin affirmed: "I know Daniel Meredith. Have had opportunities to talk with him. Had business transactions with him at the Green Tree. He always talked very sensibly to me, and I would think him to be of sound mind. Prior to April 1st I conversed with him about three times a week. He signed all the checks I filed for him."

J. Howard Taylor testified that he had known Daniel Meredith for several years. From his conversation and talk I would say he was of sound mind. There is nothing in his conduct that would lead me to believe that he couldn't manage his own affairs properly.

MR. MEREDITH NOT CALLED
"Well," remarked Thos. W. Pierce, Esq., counsel for defendant, "this is all the evidence we will offer. Daniel Meredith is here, but is not feeling as well as usual today, consequently if the jury would like to hear him I would suggest that the hearing be continued to another day, I will leave this matter of whether or not we call him to the jury."

THE ARGUMENT OF COUNSEL
No desire was expressed to have Mr. Meredith testify, and Mr. Pierce, therefore, commenced his argument to the jury. he referred to the fact that the petition for this jury in lunacy set forth the fact that for two years past Daniel B. Meredith had been of unsound mind, which has exhibited itself in various ways, such as loss of memory, general debility and as incapability to transact the ordinary affairs of life. "Great God," remarked Mr. Pierce, "is it insanity to become old? Is a man's mind wrong because he is forgetful. There isn’t a jot in evidence in this case to support the allegation. The law on the subject says that a mere weakness of mind is not ground for a commission of insanity." Daily Local News. 7/14/1893.

"Another of West Chester's old landmarks has been removed in the person of Daniel B. Meredith, one of our best known residents, who did this morning at the home of his son, Henry, on South Church Street. Mr. Meredith was born in West Whiteland township, on March 1, 1808, and consequently he had reached the ripe old age of 87 years. In early life he was a farmer, but in 1864 removed to West Chester and engaged in the butchering business. He aided very materially in building up the town, and was at one time an extensive real estate owner. He has recently been in rather feeble health." - Daily Local News. 6/5/1895.

"Daniel B. Meredith, one of West Chester's oldest and well known citizens died on Wednesday at his home on South Church Street, aged 87 years. He was born in West Whiteland Township and in early manhood followed farming, until in the (his?) he moved to West Chester and established a successful butchering business which he continued for about thirty years. He leaves five children: J. Llwellyn Meredith, Henry C. Meredith and Mrs. Geo. A. Mercer, Mrs. A. D. Hall and Mary B. Hall of Brooklyn, N.Y." CCD. 6/6/1895

A former resident of West Chester, now living in a distant city, inquires for information concerning the Meredith family prominent in this community ninety or so years ago. One man who was prominent among those who had stalls in the old marketplace that stood in the middle of Market Street, west of Church Street, was Daniel Meredith; he was the leading butcher of this town for many years. He had three sons, Thomas Darlington Meredith, Llewellyn (Lew) and Henry C. Meredith, and they each followed their father in this same line of business. Darlington died in 1872, but Lew, and Henry continued as successful meat-dealers here for many years; Henry maintained a butcher shop in the alley east of Wayne street, between Gay street and Hannum avenue, with an adjoining lot, in which he pastured numerous sheep for the local market. Darlington had one son, Daniel Webster Meredith, one of the old-time graduates of the West Chester High School, Class of 1879. "Web" was in the meat business all his life, and for many years was prominent member of the General Administration Department of the noted Armour Company, in Chicago, New York, and other sections of this nation. Darlington also had two daughters, Jennie, who married J. Gheen Morgan, of this borough, who also conducted a meat store, on north side of Gay street, east of Church street, for some years; Mary, remained single, and died here a few years ago. J. Llewellyn Meredith had a son, J. Llewellyn, Jr., who conducted a hardware store, on north side of Gay Street, west of High Street, and sold butchers' outfits. He was a non-commissioned officer of "Wayne Fencibles" N.G.P., here, for several enlistments. Henry C. Meredith had no sons, but he is survived by two daughters who live at the northwest corner of Church and Union Streets. Daily Local News. 10/6/1948.

Life of Boredom

Beyond the bandaged battle-scared physique of time, I see that old man. Enfeebled from his own eighty-four years of struggle against our common and constant enemy, he walked into the courthouse straight as a plum line, though sometimes fluttered off center by the winds of age. I see him bone thin and bone hard, with his thick butcher’s hands, the backs rippled with veins and the fingers curved with a tinge of arthritis There is palsy, too, and when these hands grip the wooden arms of the courthouse chair, his legs shake lowering him to sit.

It’s that spring of 1893 in the winter of his life, he doesn’t know what lies ahead, as I know from peeking around the shoulder of time. He wouldn’t care, of course. He’d still make this fight against the encroachment on his life. His head turns on a creaking neck to look at the opposing table where his sons sit. They do not turn to look at him. Llwellyn and Henry say he’s insane and they brought this trial to protect his property from himself. And to what ends do they protect it from him, he wonders? As he stares, he sees their mother’s visage wandering in ghostly semblance across their faces. Her name had been Jane Brinton Darlington and time, after only 38 years, silenced her count of seconds in 1854. Their last child, Clara, was born in 1853 and died that self-same year, and at the end of that next winter Jane followed her girl into the earth. And now old Daniel B. sits haunted by her features in the faces of loved adversaries.

A gavel bangs, a lawyer rises and time taps its fingers upon the bar. The trail moseys its way toward summer and at the end his lawyer rises to say, “Great God, is it insanity to become old? Is a man’s mind wrong because he is forgetful? The law on the subject says that a mere weakness of mind is not ground for a commission of insanity.” Daniel B. walked out of court as he had walked in, straight and unbowed, a sane man still.

News note: “Died. Meredith – In West Chester, June 5, 1895, Daniel B. Meredith, aged 87 years.”

He couldn’t escape the final verdict of time, but he did escape being sentenced to a life of boredom.

Richard W. Meredith (Third Great Grandfather)

Richard W. Meredith was my great-great-great Grandfather. Born on July 19, 1801, Richard W. died in Honeybrook, Pa. on October 25, 1876, he was 75.

Larry,
We may be related! I downloaded some info from Ron McAvoy (Email address RMcavoy 414) which lists a Benjamin F. Meredith as a son of Richard Meredith, born after 1783, who is a son of George B. Meredith, born May 29, 1768, and married to Hannah White. George B. is a son of Daniel Meredith and Mary Brown. Their children were
George B.
John born 2/18/1770 (this is my ancestor)
Joseph born 1/29/1773
Isaac born 6/17/1775
Ann born 1777
Margaret born 12/21/1778
Remember, I have no proof of any of this. It just gives you a place to start. I have proof of John's son Isaac and on down from there but that is all that I can authenticate.
Happy searching,
Ruth (Ocanselm). 5/19/99

About 1826 when Richard W. was 24, he married Ann Earl, who was born on March 18, 1805. Ann died on January 9, 1866 at the age of 60.

They had the following children:
Joseph E., born on 14 October 14, 1827. Joseph E. died about 1897.
Elizabeth E., born on Feb 24, 1828 and died on July 9, 1880, she was 52.
George, born on April 23, 1831. George died about 1901.
Benjamin Franklin (1834-1920)

Thomazine A., born on July 23, 1841 and died about 1911.
I found confirmation of Ruth's letter at the Chester County Historical Society. There were pages from a family Bible from the time of Richard Meredith in the vault that listed the family births and marriages.

Earliest Meredith in America

As far as I can determine, the first Meredith of my father’s family to arrive in America was David Meredith. David was born in Wales and arrived in America in 1683. He was a member of the Welsh Quaker group chartered land in Chester County, Pennsylvania by William Penn. This tract became known as West Whiteland and the Meredith family own property called Whiteland Farms.

David died in 1754 in Whiteland Township, Chester, Pa.

On January 3, 1704, David married Sarah Rush (sometimes given as Aurelia Sarah Rush) in St. Paul's Episcopal, Chester County, Pa. She was daughter of William and Aurelia Rush,. Born in 1685 in Byberry Township, Philadelphia, Pa. Sarah died in Whiteland Twp, Chester Co., Pa. on 14 Jan 1770 at age 85. She was buried in St. Paul’s Churchyard, Whiteland, Chester Co., Pa.

Meredith - "On Sunday, the 14th of January last, died Sarah Meredith, aged ninety years. (This disagrees with the birth date given by the Mormons and in the Capt. Rush History, of 1685, which would have her be 85 at death. LEM) She was born in a little Log House where the City of Philadelphia now stands (her maiden name was Rush) and there lived till she arrived to Women's State, when she married David Meredith, and soon after settled in the Great valley, Chester County, about twenty-eight Miles from Philadelphia, ... "Six miles beyond neighbors, except Indians."... She was the mother of eleven children, the grandmother of sixty-six, and great-grandmother of thirty-one; the chief of them are now living." Harrold E. Gillison, Issue of February 1, 1770, Gen. Soc. of Pa. Vol. 12, # 1. 6

They had the following children:
Susanna (7G Aunt) was born about 1712 in Chester, Pa. Susanna married a HAYES.

David (~1714-1755) Born in Whiteland, he died in Chester, Pa. at age 41. In 1737 when David was 23, he married Elinor Garrett, daughter of George and Ann Garrett, in Vincent Township, Chester Co., Pa. Elinor was Born about 1700 in Whiteland Farms, Chester Co., Pa.
They had the following children:
Ann
Esther.
Hannah.
Daniel (1745-1826)
George, born about 1749 in Chester Co., Pa.1
Sarah
Elijah
Alice

Rebecca (~1716-) Born in Chester, Pa. In 1730 when Rebecca was 14, she married John JENKINS in Near Philadelphia, Pa. Born about 1710, John died about 1780, he was 70.

They had the following children:
Joseph (~1740-~1810)
David had seven children 5
Margaret
John John married a DOUGLAS and had eight children.
Isaac
George. Had one child 5
William. Had two children 5
Jenkin
Rebecca. Had six children
Benjamin

William (7G uncle) was born about 1717 in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. William married Margaret Lloyd.

Rachel (~1719-) Born in Chester, Pa.

Rachel first married a CONOLLY.
Rachel's second marriage was to Richard DOLBY.

Chester Co. Pa. Court of Quarter sessions 1742-1759, Pg. 101 charging Richard Dolby with F & B on or about the 26th of December in the 20th year of the reign of George 2nd. Richard being of Whiteland Township, Chester Co., Pa. Rachel Meredith did give qualified testimony. Makes mention of Joseph James of Willistown and John Collins of Whiteland. These two men are apparently magistrates.

Fines were levied against Rachel and Joseph Meredith to the tune of 20 pounds apiece. Rachel was expected to appear at the next session of the courts and provide evidence. The information in this paragraph is dated 19 Mar 1746.

The true bill against Rachel reads like Richard's except that it states that she is from Whiteland Township and did permit Richard to have his way with her. There is no qualified testimony in the true bill against Rachel as there was in Richard's.

My interest in all of this is to find out about the kid. My own line is supposedly descended from Richard, but it's never been proven. He married Ann Williams in 1750 and my ancestor is supposedly of that marriage. Respectfully, Jeff Ketterer.

They had one child, name unknown.

Joseph Born about 1721 in Chester, Pa. Joseph died in Cape Fear. Went to Cape Fear and never returned.

John M. born about 1725 in Chester, Pa. John M. married Mary CLOYD, born in England.

They had one child:
John M., Jr.

Mary was born about 1725 in Chester Co., Pa. Mary married a BANE. Alias/AKA: Bank.

Hannah born about 1727 in Chester, Pa. Hannah married a GUEST.
