Benjamin Franklin Meredith IV 1920


Benjamin Franklin Meredith IV (Uncle) was born on April 6, 1920. Uncle Ben died on January 31, 1993, he was 72. he was buried with full military honors in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. He resided in Modena, Pa. in 1940. Occupation: Electrician, Lukens Steel Company (1945). Occupation: Paper machine operator, Beach and Arthur Paper Company, Modena (1942). Education: Graduated Class of 1940, Coatesville High School. Alias/AKA: Ben.28

Sergeant Benjamin Meredith, son of Mrs. Flora Meredith,has recently been promoted to the rank of staff Sergeant.  He was the leading student in a class of twenty u

ndergoing intensive training at the A.A.F. Flexible Gunnery school at Fort Myers, Fla.   Sgt. Meredith is also a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Meredith, former residents of the borough, who now reside in West Chester.  Paperville. 6/29/4?.

The Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to S/Sgt. Benjamin F. Meredith, of Modena, for "extraordinary achievement in aerial combat."  The announcement was made by Major General James P. Hodges, Commanding General of the Liberator Bombardment Division at an Eighth Air Force station in England.  He is a gunner on a B-24 Liberator heavy bomber and has already participated in 30 bombing missions over Germany and enemy occupied Europe.  The sergeant is the son of Mrs. Florence B. Meredith, of Modena.  In civilian life he was employed as a paper machine operator.  He entered the army August 1, 1942 and later received his combat training at Wendover Field, Utah. Sgt. Meredith has been overseas since March 11, 1944.  Besides the DFC, he also holds the Air Metal with three Oak Leaf Clusters to his credit.  Coatesville Record. 8/10/1944.

Twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the highest aviation honor given American airmen, the Air Metal, next highest honor, with five Oak Leaf Clusters, signifying recognition of six separate occasions, the Bronze Star, awarded for heroic achievement over western Europe, the ETO campaign ribbon and the Good Conduct Metal, S/Sgt. Benjamin F. Meredith, son of Mrs. Florence Meredith, of Modena, has been honorably discharged from the U. S. Army.  A tail gunner on a B-24, Sgt. Meredith has flown 35 combat missions with a total of 240 combat hours in the ETO.  A modest hero, reluctant to talk of his service in the ETO, Sgt. Meredith, who didn't think people would be interested in his discharge, carefully explained that he didn't do anything special for his awards, adding "they just gave them to me."  A graduate of Coatesville High in the class of 1940, Sgt. Meredith was employed by the Beach and Arthur Paper Company, Modena, before his induction.  Coatesville Record. 10/24/1945

On December 1, 1945, when Benjamin Franklin was 25, he married Dorothy R. Hause, daughter of Edward 

Hause, in the home of Rev. William F. Hopkins, Elkton, MD. Occupation: Employed in the main office of Lukens Steel company.

Meredith - Hause  Miss Dorothy R. Hause, daughter of Edward Hause, of 361 Harmony Street, this city, and Benjamin F. Meredith, son of Mrs. Florence Meredith, of Modena, were united in marriage at a ceremony performed at the home of the Rev. William F. Hopkins at Elkton, Maryland, on Saturday morning, December first, at eleven o'clock.  

The bride is employed in the main office of Lukens Steel Company.  The bridegroom is employed as an electrician by the same company.  Coatesville Record. 12/20/1945.
